The historic McDonald Lawrence house is believed to be the first house constructed in Marietta following the
Civil War. Construction of the house began in 1870 and was completed in 1878, with three additions to the rear of the house
in later years. An earlier structure on the same foundations served as the headquarters of General Joseph E. Johnston during
the Civil War and was burned by Federal forces.
The House was once owned by the families of Georgia Governor Charles J. McDonald (1837 to 1845). Several of Marietta's
early streets are named for these families including: McDonald, Lawrence and Sessions.
The purchaser should expect to replace the heating and cooling systems; update the wiring and plumbing; and,
replace the roofing, among other possibilities. The listed price allows such enhancements to be made while keeping the total
cost within the price range of Walnut Grove.
